About the Collection
Consigned to Darkness is an anti-authoritarian collection of dissent, resistance, witness, and power in print.
The collection brings together books, pamphlets, magazines, newspapers, comics, and other printed objects connected to people confronting power — and to the power that confronted them. Some resisted governments, institutions, repression, and social convention. Others helped build, justify, or sustain those same forces. They do not all agree with one another. They aren't supposed to.
What connects them is a belief in the inherent value of individual human beings. No ideology, institution, or concentration of power is more valuable than the people who must live under it.
These aren't simply old copies of words available elsewhere. These exact objects survived history. They were printed, circulated, litigated, smuggled, hidden, banned, and sometimes preserved at extraordinary human cost. Even the hateful and dangerous belong here — not to be admired, but because understanding power requires confronting the ideas that helped build it.
In one way or another, these objects were consigned to darkness. This collection brings them back into the light.
Explore them. Question them. Debate them. Complain about them. Rage with your friends about them.
The point isn't simply to preserve the objects. It's to keep the conversations they started alive.
